Obi Expresses Sadness over Death of Jerry Rawlings

. . . Condoles with Government, People of Ghana

Vice Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in 2019 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has described the death of Former Ghanaian President, Jerry John Rawlings, as sorrowful.

Jerry Rawlings, who was reportedly certified dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, capital of Ghana, on Thursday morning, was said to have died of complications from COVID-19 disease.

In a condolence message released by his media office, Obi described Rawlings as a true leader, under whom Ghana witnessed a sporadic economic and political turn-around for the better. Obi said Rawlings was an agent of positive change who, even when he left office, continued to contribute to the growth and development of Ghana as a nation, and Africa at large. He said the former Ghanaian President will forever be remembered for his struggles to enthrone good governance in Ghana and greater development in Africa.

“The painful death of Jerry Rawlings is not only an irreparable loss to Ghana, but to Africa in general. His days as the President of Ghana led to the restoration of good governance and economic progress to the nation. As an elder statesman, he continued to proffer leadership and development ideas to other African countries. He will forever be missed”, Obi mourned.

Recalling his days as the Governor of Anambra, Obi said he was hosted by Jerry Rawlings on many occasions in Ghana. He said Rawlings was a friend and true leader, whose leadership footprints span across Africa.

Obi condoled with the government and people of Ghana, urging them to take solace in the legacies left behind by Late Rawlings. He equally prayed God to give his immediate family the fortitude to bear the loss, while praying for the peaceful repose of the great leader.
